■A large oriental rug worth an estimated $20,000 was stolen early Monday morning from an Amherst College fraternity. It was the second theft of a rug from Alpha Delta Phi this semester.

■Kay-Vee Homes Inc. of Easthampton agreed last night to take measures halting the inadvertent drainage of a swamp, called the “muck-hole,” in Florence, adjacent to Kay-Vee’s Brookwood Estates construction site.

25 Years Ago

■Still euphoric about winning a seat on the City Council at long last, Phillip Sullivan has decided to hold his own inaugural bash — a party traditionally planned by the mayor. Sullivan, who defeated Patrick M. Goggins on Nov. 4 to win one of two at-large City Council seats, said his supporters want to celebrate the victory with a big party on Jan. 5, including dancing, liquor and smoking.

■In a marriage of communications old and new, a telecommunications relay is being proposed for the imposing belltower of St. Brigid’s Church in Amherst. Omnipoint Communication is proposing to install the new-era cellular telecommunication device as part of a network it is building in Massachusetts.

10 Years Ago

■The Amherst Survival Center has vacated the cramped basement on North Pleasant Street that has been its home for 33 years, and on Monday it will open its new building at 138 Sunderland Road. The Survival Center provides about 4,000 low-income people a year with free lunches, groceries, housewares, clothes and medical care.

■The Northampton Historical Commission preserved the dilapidated Shaw’s Motel building for up to a year Monday night, despite having scant historical information — and without a look inside because the structure is deemed unsafe to enter.
