50 Years Ago

■A dress code drafted by the student council at Smith’s Vocational High School was presented to the school’s trustees last night. Mustaches hanging below the edge of the lip or dropping below the edge of the mouth would be forbidden under the proposed code. So are beards and some styles of sideburns.

■A heavy potted evergreen tree in front of the Northampton Post Office was knocked over last night in what a post office spokesman termed the second act of vandalism there in a month. For the 10 years that he has been a postal employee, said Chief Custodian Joseph White, he had never seen the Post Office here vandalized.

25 Years Ago

■Two local women are planning to open a fitness center on Hawley Street by the first week in January. Linda Rahm of Northampton and Elizabeth Cole of Westhampton have signed a purchase and sale agreement with Michael Fritz, president of Rugg Manufacturing Co., to purchase Rugg’s former Northampton store at 33 Hawley St.

■Ilan Stavans, an Amherst College professor, is the editor of the new magazine Hopscotch. The magazine will feature political, social and pop-culture commentary on all people and places Hispanic.

10 Years Ago

■A long-planned function hall for weddings, conferences and similar events at the former Baptist Church at the corner of Main and West streets downtown should be open next summer. Eric Suher, who bought the historic structure 18 years ago, told the License Commission Wednesday that renovation of the space has been full of starts and stops but is back on track again.

■The city’s Recreation Department held a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday for the new Florence recreation fields at the former Bean and Allard farms. The project includes five multipurpose fields and two baseball fields, a concessions and bathroom facility, walkways, parking and a play structure.
