■Two Democratic candidates for state representative from the First Hampshire District will be interviewed tonight on Channel 57. The two candidates, Rep. Edward McColgan of Northampton and Stephen Kozloski of Easthampton, were nominated in the Sept. 19 primary. A third candidate for the two seats from the district is Rep. Louis Morini, an incumbent Republican.

■Lt. Gov. Donald Dwight and Sen. John Barrus, R-Goshen, had a busy afternoon Tuesday as they shook hands with scores of people along a half dozen stops throughout Northampton and Easthampton. Barrus is running for reelection with John Olver, D-Amherst, as his opponent.

■A plan by a group of teachers and parents to create a novel kind of charter school within the Northampton public schools hit a dead end last night. Saying it has too many financial and logistical problems, School Committee members voted down the proposal 6-2, with two members absent.

■Former Democratic Congresswoman Patricia Schroeder and Coretta Scott King, widow of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, participated in Crossworlds 1997 last night at the Mullins Center at UMass. Crossworlds is a series of conversations presented by the University of Massachusetts chancellor’s office as part of the campus’ commitment to diversity and understanding.

■The owners of a small chain of Irish pubs have inked a deal to lease the former Pleasant Street Theater space downtown for a new 75-seat restaurant. The pub, to be called McLadden’s Irish Publick House, could open by the end of the year.

■A retired New York City comptroller with expertise in budgets and finances is the newest trustee for the Jones Library. Robert Pam was unanimously appointed at a joint meeting of the Select Board and remaining trustees, receiving all nine votes from those present Monday night.
