■A buffet in honor of Hazel M. McGrath, longtime chair of the Ward 4 Democratic Committee, will be held Sunday evening at Alexander’s Starlite Room. Miss McGrath, former state committeewoman and delegate to national and state conventions, is being honored by the Ward 4 Democratic Committee for her contribution to the Democratic Party.

■The pool at Northampton’s Look Park probably will have to be replaced at a cost of between $200,000 and $300,000. Fortunately, the cost could be borne by the State Bureau of Outdoor Recreation and the Trustees of Look Park, not by the city, Mayor Sean Dunphy told a meeting of the City Council Finance Committee last night.

■Students arriving at local colleges on Labor Day weekend may lack some essentials thanks to the United Parcel Service strike. Trunks and bicycles normally shipped by students via UPS may be delayed indefinitely unless the strike ends soon, say local college officials. And some students may have to scramble for textbooks.

■The Patel family are the new owners of Bird’s Store in Florence. The Patels have been at the helm of the store since July 1, after closing on a deal to buy the store from Florence businessman James Brazeau. The family plans few major changes at the 130-year-old variety store.

■Boston College athletic director and Northampton native Gene DeFilippo said on Friday that he was stepping down after 15 years, a tenure in which he stabilized the program in the aftermath of a gambling scandal, led it into a new conference, and collected four NCAA men’s hockey championships.

■Easthampton lost its senior employee last week when David “Daisy” Kieliszek retired from the Water Department. After 44 years working various jobs in the Department of Public Works, the 62-year-old said he felt like he had earned a little rest and relaxation.
