■A ban on the sale of easily concealable handguns has been passed by the Senate and sent to an uncertain fate in the House. The Senate bill is aimed primarily at cheap, snub-nosed, lightweight handguns of the kind commonly called “Saturday night specials,” but it also would bar the sale of other higher-quality weapons that are easily concealed.

■The Northampton Redevelopment Authority has received a request from a group of doctors to move into the recently completed industrial park on Damon Road. The request was made in a letter of intent received by the Redevelopment Authority two weeks ago, but there is some question whether the application will be accepted.

25 Years Ago

■A combination of stunning weather and its diverse menu got the Taste of Northampton off to a strong start yesterday, participants said. And it’s expected to get bigger and stronger, as the four-day food festival heads into the weekend with a forecast of clear weather.

■A boarding school designed to prepare adolescents in state custody for college will be the first residential public charter school in the state, and maybe the first in the nation. The school, intended for students in Grades 7 through 12, will be located on the campus of the St. Hyacinth College and Seminary in Granby.

■Once a lightning rod in the debate over whether the city should expand its dump, the former Fedora property off Glendale Road may one day produce a different kind of electricity — solar. The Board of Public Works is considering a proposal to use some of the 20 acres the city owns on Glendale Road for a solar array that would generate electricity and put a dent in the city’s annual power bill.

■A new luxury hotel is expected to open in Hadley this fall. Jessie Yanovsky, the owner of Pet Hotel Hadley, which is under construction on Route 9, says she expected the building at 151 Russell St. to be open for business by November.
