■As thousands of Northampton area residents enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner yesterday, the first snowstorm of the season dropped from 12 to 17 inches of snow, causing traffic snarl-ups, cancellations, and sore backs. The storm began with flurries Wednesday night and did not let up until late Thursday afternoon.

■District Attorney John Callahan, granted a last-minute authorization for three new assistants last Monday night, will have new office space to house them. This morning the Hampshire County Commissioners authorized Callahan to go ahead with a $6,000 construction project in the second floor of the annex to the Hampshire County Courthouse.

■Easthampton’s Jillian Lamoureux won the title of Greater Easthampton Junior Miss 1997 yesterday afternoon, culminating a three-hour show at the Academy of Music in Northampton that featured the talent of 17 girls. Lamoureux, an Easthampton High School senior, is the 31st girl to hold the title.

■In the three years since it took shape in a church basement, a league of gay and lesbian business owners continues to grow quickly, adding members and programs. Recently a variety of businesses set up shop in the Hotel Northampton’s ballroom, in an effort to pitch their products and services to members of the gay and lesbian community.

■Pioneer Valley Local First, one of 80 chapters of Business Alliance for Local Living Economies nationwide, wants to narrow the shopping focus to local, independently owned businesses. The local emphasis means more money stays in the Pioneer Valley, going to support area businesses that, in turn, support efforts to make the Valley a better place to live and work, according to Daniel Finn, a founder of Local First.

■Amherst officials are not giving up hope that passenger rail service will remain part of the transportation landscape in town. Town officials have signed on to efforts pressing for additional federal funding for studies to improve regional passenger and freight rail service.
