50 Years Ago

■Construction of a new war memorial in Memorial Park, Williamsburg, is underway. It will hold plaques with the names of all veterans of wars from town. They have previously been scattered on school buildings and in the park. The memorial is expected to be finished by Memorial Day.

■After 19 years of service on the local draft board, Chairman James E. Faulkner today announced his resignation as a member of Selective Service Board No. 15, effective June 1. “I have given 22 years of my life to the military and I am proud of every minute of this time spent,” Faulkner said.

25 Years Ago

■A half dozen Northampton High School students will match wits with a set of parents in a competition on Monday. The student team is made up of Ben Baumer, Paul Lavallee, Frank Philbrick, and Roger Taylor. There are two alternates, Tom MacMillan and Dan Hyman. The parent team includes John Colgan, Pam Hunter, Emily Jayne Duckworth and Michael Ford.

■Following through on her promise to improve diversity at Smith College, President Ruth Simmons has made a high-level hire that expands and elevates the former post of affirmative action officer. Carmen Santana-Melgoza, an associate professor of management at New Mexico State University, has been named assistant to the president and director of institutional diversity.

10 Years Ago

■Jake’s, a city fixture since 1978 that advertises no-frills dining, needs a new operator — fast. Owners Gary and Carol Perman of Westhampton, who bought the building and business last July, are looking for someone to lease the restaurant. The current lessee, Melissa Flynn Brunt of Easthampton, who took over operation of the restaurant at the time of the sale, is bowing out.

■With the OK from Hatfield voters in hand, Hatfield officials next week will put out a call for proposals from anyone interested in leasing the long-vacant Center School property at 58 Main St. Only one group has already expressed interest — the Hilltown Cooperative Charter Public School in Williamsburg, which has long been searching for new quarters.
