■A storm that started with snow, then changed to sleet and freezing rain, and may change back to snow before ending late today, canceled schools throughout the region, and left driving and walking hazardous. Driving conditions on sleet-packed roads this morning taxed the patience of even the best drivers and speed limits were dropped drastically.

■Northampton’s mayor has been appointed to an Environmental Committee that will work on specific programs in the areas of air and water pollution, solid waste management, atomic energy, noise control and urban aesthetics. Mayor Robert Knecht of Boulder, Colo., committee chairman, appointed Northampton’s Mayor Sean M. Dunphy to the Environmental Quality Steering Committee of the National League of Cities.

■The owner of PrintShack in Hadley said he has bought the site of the former Katina’s nightclub at 322 Russell St. and will move his business there. Robert Salvini, a resident of Amherst, said he made the move because he’s seen a significant increase in business, and he’s been wanting to buy his own building.

■Bruce Cleare of Whately has joined Wright Buildings Inc. of Northampton as vice president of operations. Cleare has worked more than 15 years in construction, most recently associated with Heyl Cleare Construction. He replaces James Van Natta of Northfield, who left the position to pursue commercial construction management opportunities.

■Former City Council President Michael R. Bardsley plans to run again for mayor of Northampton this year, believing he can rebuild the support that took him within 344 votes of victory in 2009. Bardsley becomes the first mayoral candidate out of the gate.

■Nine new officers have joined the Northampton Police Department in its largest round of new hires in more than 30 years. Capt. Scott Savino said the new officers were culled from 300 candidates who took the department’s entrance examination Nov. 6.
