The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement and a hazardous weather outlook saying that thunderstorms may be possible in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut today and Thursday.

“Both statements just mean that conditions are favorable for these things to happen,” said Alan Dunham, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Boston.

The special weather statement said that two thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening, with the first happening from northern Connecticut to western and central Massachusetts and the second across Rhode Island and eastern Massachusetts. These thunderstorms may produce damaging winds and downpours that could flood the streets. There’s also the potential of a few rotating storms and a low risk of an isolated tornado.

The hazardous weather outlook also warned of potential thunderstorms today and tomorrow across northern Connecticut, all of Massachusetts east of Berkshire County and Rhode Island that could cause poor local drainage flooding.

“People should just look out for warnings and stay inside if there’s bad weather,” said Dunham.
