Daley Field Road, Nonotuck Park, Easthampton

Photograph and text by Derek Allard, Easthampton

While walking in Nonotuck Park in mid May, I was lucky enough to hear veeries singing. These birds have a lovely downward spiraling flute-like call. Typically I don’t have a very good look at them as they are rather reclusive. However, when I looked up, this bird was right in front of me singing away. Veeries emit a variety of whistled, squealed and chattering calls. This veery stayed on the stump for over a minute and I was able to make some decent photos. The bug in this photo is a happy accident that I didn’t notice until I returned home.

Captured with a DSLR and a zoom lens.
