Susan Zachary: A shopper’s generosity makes gentleman’s day

Published: 9/9/2019 5:00:10 PM

I witnessed something wonderful during a recent weekend. I was waiting at the self-checkout section of Walmart, as all the stations were being used.

An older gentleman at one of the stations was having trouble making his card work to pay for his considerable pile of items. The clerk came over to assist, but it still would not work.

The poor gentleman was confused and becoming upset when another customer, who was ringing in her own items, came over and said “Use my card” and proceeded to insert it into the payment slot. The gentleman protested, saying that he had too much, but she said it was fine, made the purchase, then completed her own purchase and left the store without any fuss.

Everyone there was astonished that someone could be so generous to a stranger. As I was driving away, I passed the old gentleman putting his bags into the back of one of the town’s taxi vans that had been waiting for him near the entrance. I heard him exclaim to the driver, who held open the trunk — “She paid for it ALL!” That made my day.

Thank you to that generous shopper who I’m sure made that gentleman’s day one he won’t ever forget.
