SOUTH DEERFIELD — Sixteen employees were let go from Yankee Candle as a part of “some small organizational changes,” parent company Newell Brands stated Thursday.

There was little additional information released by Newell Brands. Questions on what division these 16 people were in, what facility they were working in and any specific reason to why they were fired were unanswered before press time by the company’s spokesman, Michael Sinatra.

“Today, some employees in South Deerfield were informed of changes to our organization that will impact their roles at our company,” the statement reads. “Decisions impacting people are some of the hardest we make as an organization and a process we don’t take lightly.”

Yankee Candle directed questions regarding the layoffs to Newell Brands, which is based in New Jersey.

The statement pointed to a January announcement by the company, its “Accelerated Transformation Plan,” which was intended to help Newell Brands continue to make “progress in reshaping the company.”

“Newell Brands is making sharp portfolio choices and strengthening the organization as the company drives toward its goal of becoming a leading consumer goods company that is simpler, faster and stronger,” the statement said.

Sinatra confirmed in an email the loss of 16 jobs in South Deerfield, noting that the company employs “more than 1,400 employees” in the area

Yankee Candle Co. Inc., including its flagship store, is valued at around $14.5 million, according to Deerfield property assessment records online. Yankee Candle Way LLC, including a distribution center, is valued at about $17.4 million. Between the two, which are technically individual entities, that comes to about $31.9 million.
