WILLIAMSBURG — The Cultural Council has revealed the 11 recipients of its grants for 2021, which will help to fund everything from a nature hike to a theatrical production.

“We had a lot of really interesting applications,” said Abi Knopp, a member of the Cultural Council. “We had to make some hard choices.”

In total, the council received 29 applications and $5,340 worth of funds have been designated. Those who receive the grants are reimbursed after their projects are completed.

One such project is the Visual Arts Kits for the Anne T. Dunphy School, which was created because the COVID-19 pandemic has made sharing art supplies between students problematic.

“They had to get extra supplies so each student could use them,” Knopp said.

The Friends of Williamsburg Libraries will use its grant for a Just Mercy Book Discussion Series through which students in Williamsburg and surrounding communities from fourth through twelfth grade will receive a copy of the book “Just Mercy (Adapted for Young Adults): A True Story of the Fight for Justice.” The book tells the story of lawyer Bryan Stevenson’s work defending the wrongfully imprisoned. Parents will also be invited to three talks to discuss what their children think about the book. Finally, the students will create posters inspired by the book, which will be posted in Williamsburg and surrounding communities.

“It’s a really interesting proposal,” Knopp said.

Other projects that are being funded include the Angel Park Music Series, the Williamsburg Players’ production of the original play “Ravens Return,” a nature hike on Horse Mountain and the Global Music Food and Dance Series.
