AMHERST – The Suburban League South can’t handle Amherst.

The Hurricanes boys basketball team remained undefeated in league play after taking out Westfield 63-33 on Tuesday at home. They improved to 6-0 and stayed on track for a league title with two games to go. A win at Pope Francis on Thursday (7 p.m.) would clinch at least a share. The teams went to four overtimes the last time they met in Amherst.

Tuesday’s game was not that close.

Amherst (8-6, 6-0 Suburban South) scored the game’s first nine points and held the Bombers (2-11, 1-5) off the board for 4 minutes, 20 seconds until Antonio Adams dropped in a layup after an offensive rebound.

Westfield pulled as close as 11-6 but never reduced the lead to a single possession. Amherst pushed to double digits in the second quarter and over 20 in the third.

Amherst’s Marcelo Aquino fueled most of that growth, scoring 17 of his game-high 20 points in the first half.

Ryder Rietkerk added 11 points for the Hurricanes.

Yahsiel Devi Dalonba’s layup with 18 seconds remaining gave the Hurricanes their largest lead.
