WILLIAMSTOWN — Lexi Politis' goal with 21 seconds remaining pulled the Mount Greylock girls lacrosse team within a goal of visiting Amherst in Saturday’s Western Mass. Class B semifinal.

While Greylock got the ball back with 19 seconds, the Hurricanes were able to prevent the Mounties offense from setting itself up, running out the clock in a come-from-behind 12-11 victory Saturday on John T. Allen Field.

No. 3 Amherst advanced to the Class B final and a date with No. 4 Belchertown. That game was slated for Tuesday, with the time and location still to be determined at deadline.

Amherst led 6-5 at halftime, but the Mounties shut out the Hurricanes 3-0 in the third quarter. The visitors found a second wind in the fourth quarter, outscoring Greylock 6-3, accounting for the 12-11 final score.

Amherst’s Francesca Sloan scored her fourth goal in the final minute and set up the eventual game-winning goal by Kiko Bhowmik with 34.5 seconds remaining.

Amherst goalie Cedar Conrad made 11 saves, including some key rejections down the stretch to keep the visitors ahead or tied.

“She’s the best goalie we’ve seen besides our own,” Greylock coach Jeff Stripp said of Conrad. “She’s good. And she made us work.”

Amherst had scored three unanswered goals to take an 11-9 lead with 3:38 to play.

Greylock responded as Meghan Lagerwall set up Gianna Pesce, who was cutting toward the goal, and Pesce's shot eluded Conrad with 1:53 left.

The one-goal deficit became two goals after the Hurricanes, who worked time off the clock, converted when Sloan found Kiko Bhowmik for what proved to be the deciding goal. Politis scored with 21.7 ticks on the clock, but the Mounties did not get another chance.

Amherst improved to 17-2 on the season with its seventh consecutive win. The ’Canes will get a crack at a sectional title later this week against a Belchertown team that beat them 13-8 back on May 3.

Abigail Como and Talia Sadiq netted four goals apiece for Amherst, while Sloan buried a hat trick and dished out two assists.

Amherst 8, Belchertown 5 – Jason Kim made 19 saves in net for Amherst, which won its regular season finale on Saturday to finish with a 6-12 record.

The Hurricanes hope the win will be enough to get them inside the top 32 of the MIAA Division 3 field when the brackets are released on Wednesday. Amherst was the No. 32 seed in the most recent bracket release, and Saturday’s win will hopefully be enough for a state tourney berth.

Tre Bowman scored four goals in the win, while Silas Hazen (2G), Skyler Ferro (1G, 1A) and Devine Moyston (1G) rounded out the scoring.

Belchertown (10-8) already qualified for the state tournament and will away the Div. 4 bracket release later this week.
