Western Mass basketball seeds: Amherst/Northampton highlights girls Class A

The PVIAC announced the fields for the Western Mass boys and girls basketball tournament on Friday, with 14 Gazette Area schools earning spots in their respective classes.
The girls basketball tournament kicks off Monday, with the Class A field featuring a matchup between two local schools. Northampton comes in as the No. 6 seed and will be on the road to take on No. 3 Amherst on Monday at 5 p.m. Holyoke also earned a spot in the Class A field, with the Purple Knights seeded No. 4 and hosting No. 5 Longmeadow at 5 p.m. Monday.
In Class B, No. 6 Frontier will make the trip to Easthampton to face the No. 3 Eagles, with tipoff set for 6 p.m. Monday. South Hadley is the No. 5 seed and will take on No. 4 Pope Francis at 5 p.m. Monday while No. 8 Belchertown heads out to Pittsfield to square off with the No. 1 Generals on Monday at 4 p.m.
Hopkins Academy made its way into the Class D field, coming in as the No. 7 seed where it will take on No. 2 Lenox on Monday at 4 p.m.
The boys tournament also gets underway on Monday, with Northampton coming in as the No. 5 seed and Amherst the No. 8 seed in Class A. The Blue Devils go on the road to face No. 4 Longmeadow at 7 p.m. Monday while the Hurricanes draw top seeded Pope Francis, with tipoff set for 7 p.m. on Monday.
South Hadley and Belchertown made the Class B bracket. The Tigers are the No. 6 seed and will take on No. 3 Pittsfield on Monday at 6:30 p.m. while the Orioles earned the No. 7 seed and the right to square off with No. 2 SICS on Monday at 7 p.m.
Class D features a matchup between two locals, with No. 7 Smith Academy traveling to Hadley to face No. 2 Hopkins at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Granby is the No. 4 seed and will host No. 5 Duggan on Monday at 7 p.m.

The MIAA Div. 2 and 3 state wrestling meets got underway on Friday, with Holyoke and Granby wrestlers who qualified traveling to Milton for the Div. 2 tournament while qualified grapplers from Smith Vocational, Gateway, South Hadley and Hampshire made their way to Wakefield for the Div. 3 tournament.
Out in Milton, Holyoke’s Juan Santiago won his first match by pin over King Phillips’ Jared Shaprio at 220 but fell to Bridgewater’s Myles Beckett in the quarterfinals. Granby’s Junior Ramsey also won his first match, beating Bellingham’s Paul Grieco 17-8, but lost to Bridgewater’s Nathan Leach via pin in the quarterfinals.
Both Santiago and Ramsey will compete in their respective consolation brackets on Saturday.
At the Div. 3 meet, Smith Vocational's Forrest McSweeney (145) and Mateo Henriques (106) each went 1-1 to remain alive in the consolation bracket heading into Saturday. Gateway’s Eli Gilbert is also alive heading into Saturday, losing his first match before earning a win in the consolation bracket to stay going into Saturday.
South Hadley’s Logan Luis (120) and Hampshire’s Alex Willard (152) each went 1-1 to continue competing on Saturday.
Frontier’s Wyatt Finch and Conner Hoffman also recorded wins in the championship bracket on Friday. Finch defeated Holliston’s Bavly Mikhail by pin in the first round in his opening match at 113, but fell to Melrose’s Michael Thomas in the quarterfinals.
Hoffman faced off with Mahar’s Xander Roberts in his opening match at 170 and walked away with a 6-1 win to advance to the quarterfinals. He fell to Bristol County’s Malakai Risotti in the quarterfinals via third period pin.
