GRANBY — Residents echoed their disapproval of a Proposition 2½ debt exclusion override to renovate the West Street Building into town offices during Monday’s town elections after previously voting the project down at a special Town Meeting last month.
While the West Street Building Committee’s first option to renovate and abate the old school building for $14.7 million failed on April 8, approval of the debt exclusion at the ballot box would have allowed the committee to bring two other options for the project back to Town Meeting this spring.
Voters, however, were unswayed, shooting down the override request by a vote of 460 against to 399 in favor.
“I don’t know what the next steps are,” West Street Building Committee Chair Lynn Mercier said during the committee’s Tuesday meeting. “I’m very sad, but it is what it is.”
Town Meeting members already earmarked $3 million to demolish the West Street Building during the special Town Meeting, but the committee expressed interest in exploring the bare minimum renovations on the building to meet state codes and move town offices in. These renovations would use the $5.7 million already allocated to the project.
Without the debt exclusions approval, the West Street Building Committee waits for the new Select Board and town administrator’s next request. Tammy Martin begins as the town administrator on June 2, and the new Select Board had its first meeting on Tuesday night.
Mark Bail, a former Select Board member who continued to serve his community by disseminating critical public information on social media and in town forums, will take Select Board Chair Crystal Dufresne’s seat.
In the race for Town Clerk, Emily Reed will replace her predecessor Katherine Kelly-Regan. Reed has served Granby as the assistant town clerk under Kelly-Regan. Virigina Hajdamowicz, who currently works as the administrative assistant to Granby’s superintendent, ran against Reed.
