Weekend colleges: Davis, DeSantis lift UMass men’s soccer over Saint Louis

The UMass men’s soccer team opened Atlantic 10 play Saturday with a 3-1 road victory over Saint Louis.

Amherst native Davis Smith scored twice, while Belchertown native Alex DeSantis added a goal for the Minutemen (6-2-2, 1-0-0 Atlantic 10)0.

They were the fourth goals on the season for each player.

Bardia Asefnia made four saves for UMass.

Amherst 2, Rutgers-Newark 1 (OT) — Sebastian Derby netted the winner and Fikayo Ajayi added a goal as the Mammoths (4-1-1) won at home on Sunday.

Hope Gund made eight saves in the win.

Amherst 1,Tufts 0 — An own goal in the 62nd minute gave the Mammoths (3-1-1, 2-1-1 NESCAC) the win at home, Saturday.

Women’s soccer

UMass 0, VCU 0 — Cassidy Babin made two saves as the Minutewomen (5-5-2, 2-1-1 A-10) earned the draw on the road Sunday.

Amherst 7, New England College 0 — Rubii Tamen scored four goals, while Lexy Cook, Cassie Chin and Laura Greer each had one as the Mammoths rolled on Sunday.

Chelsea Cutler made three saves in the shutout.

Springfield 7, Mount Holyoke 0 — The Lyons 2-7-1, 0-3 NEWMAC) fell at home on Saturday.

WPI 2, Smith 0 — Shelby Hall made seven saves in the loss for the host Pioneers (5-4, 1-2 NEWMAC) Saturday.

Tufts 2, Amherst 1 (OT) — Hannah Guzzi scored but the Mammoths (3-5-0, 1-4-0 NESCAC) fell at home Saturday.

Men’s ice hockey

UMass 1, Queens University 0 — Niko Rufo scored as the Minutemen won their exhibition at the Mullins Center Saturday.

UMass goaltenders Ryan Wischow, Matt Murray and Brad Arvanitis each played one period in the shutout. Wischow made five saves, while Murray and Arvanitis had eight and 12 stops, respectively.


Bridgewater 28, Westfield State 9 — Cody Cleveland (Northampton) kicked a 24-yard field goal and an extra point, while Brandon Rivera (Amherst) had four tackles, including three solo, for the visiting Owls (0-5) Saturday.

Field Hockey

UConn 8, UMass 0 — Emily Hazard made eight saves but the Minutewomen (8-4) lost on the road to the top-ranked Huskies (11-0) Sunday.

Babson 3, Mount Holyoke 1 — Kathryn Rawson scored with an assist from Mirjam Keochakian but the Lyons (5-4, 3-0 NEWMAC) fell at home to the second-ranked Beavers (10-1, 3-0) Saturday.

Tufts 2, Amherst 0 — Emilie Flamme had seven saves for the Mammoths (6-2, 2-2 NESCAC) Saturday.

MIT 1, Smith College 0 — Cameo Tietje made seven stops but the Pioneers (4-5, 1-2 NEWMAC) lost at home Saturday.

Simmons 4, Anna Maria 1 — Missie Maiewski (Northampton) scored once as the Sharks (7-3, 4-0 GNAC) cruised at home Saturday.

Women’s volleyball

MIT 3, Mount Holyoke 0 — Jamesa Allen had nine kills and Cameron Graham added 17 digs but the Lyons (5-6, 1-5 NEWMAC) fell 25-21, 25-10, 25-8 on the road Saturday.

Smith 3, Eastern Nazarene 1; Wheaton 3, Smith 0 — Amy Hagen had 15 kills and 29 digs, while Kimani Freeman added 16 assists for the Lyons (7-8, 0-5 NEWMAC), who split in Norton.

Wesleyan 3, Amherst 0; Amherst 3, Stevens 0 — The Mammoths (11-4, 2-2 NESCAC) split in Middletown, Connecticut, Saturday.

Emily Kolsky totaled 19 kills, while Charlotte Duran had a combined 52 assists.


George Phinney Classic — Isabella Ouyang (78-79–157) tied for second and Morgan Yurosek (79-79–158) tied for fourth as Amherst placed first in Middlebury, Vermont.

Northampton native Caitlyn Richmond (96-85–181) tied for 41st for sixth-place Mount Holyoke.
