Local Roundup: Eliza Speek takes second at Mahar Girls Wrestling Tournament

Three Granby girls wrestlers competed in the Mahar Girls Wrestling Tournament on Monday in Orange. 

The Rams placed 10th overall in the 55-team tournament, with Eliza Speek leading the way with a second place finish at 138 after going 2-1 on the day. 

Quinn Speek won three matches to take fourth at 126 while Theseus Doherty competed and went 0-2 at 132 for Granby. 

Nordic ski

Ella Workman placed third (17 minutes, eight seconds) while River Wolaver took sixth (18:42), helping the Amherst girls Nordic ski team earn a first place finish at a meet at Prospect Mountain on Saturday. 

Isla Cusick took seventh (18:59), Addie Mager took ninth (19:35) and Zoey Candito took 13th (20:07). 

The Hurricane boys took fourth place, with Ian Burns taking sixth overall (14:47). Julian Camera (13th, 16:00), Calvin Miller (17th, 16:30), Ben Feeney (24th, 17:35) and Peter Nedeau (25th, 18:34) rounded out the top five Amherst finishers. 

Augustus Niswonger took 19th (16 minutes, 43 seconds), Adam Muller placed 21st (17:15), Vincent Gauthier placed 22nd (17:17), Aidan Gauthier took 26th (18:36) and Luke Pickard came in 27th (19:07) as the Mohawk Trail boys Nordic ski team placed fifth at a meet at Prospect Mountain on Saturday. Hampshire athletes compete in a co-op with the Warriors. 

On the girls side, the Warriors took fifth, with Anya Read placing 10th (19:44), Corinne Somes coming in 15th (20:27), Charlotte Niswonger earning 16th (20:39) and Sadie Mahon-Moore taking 24th (23:23).

Lucas Machan and Wes Hayens scored for the Williston boys hockey team in a 5-2 loss to Berkshire on Saturday. 

The Wildcat girls squash team fell to Hotchkiss (8-0) and Millbrook (8-0) on Saturday. The Williston boys swim team fell to St. George’s (122-58), with Herrick Stevenson winning the 100 and 200 free while the Wildcat girls swim team beat St. George’s (98-82) behind wins in the 200 and 500 free from Lucy Hoyt and wins in the 50 and 100 free from Mya Schattin. 

The Williston girls hockey team beat Fredrick Gunn, 10-1, behind a hat trick from Nora Curtis, a goal from Malaya Anaba and five points from Monique Lyons, making Lyons the all-time leading point scorer in program history. 

At the Hoophall Classic on Sunday, the Williston boys basketball team beat West Nottingham Academy, 65-48, behind 20 points from Nemo Turner, 17 points from Preston Edmead and 13 points from Ricardo Nieves.
