Wednesday’s colleges: UMass men’s lacrosse remains winless after loss to Albany

The UMass men’s lacrosse team remained winless on the season following a 17-8 loss at Albany Wednesday.

Dan Muller and Buddy Carr each had two goals for the Minutemen (0-4), which fell behind in the second quarter when the Great Danes (2-1) scored six straight to take an 11-4 lead.

Dom St. Laurent, Ben Spencer, John Tierney and Jake Marino each had one goal.

D.J. Smith had 14 saves over 53-plus minutes in goal, while Sean Sconone made one save in relief for UMass.

The Minutemen play at Yale at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Women’s basketball

Top ranked and undefeated Amherst College will host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Division III Tournament this weekend.

Mary Washington (23-4) will play Sage (20-8) at 5 p.m. Friday at LeFrak Gymnasium.

Amherst (27-0) will face Regis (22-6) at 7.

Amherst is coming off a seventh NESCAC Tournament championship.

Ticket prices will be $7 for adults, $4 for students, children and senior citizens (65 and older), and free for children age 2 and under.

The first round winners will play at 6 Saturday.

Men’s basketball

Amherst earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament will head to Ramapo College in Mahwah, New Jersey for the first round.

Amherst (17-7) will play Keene State (19-9) at 5:30 p.m. Former Putnam standout Ty Nichols averages 18.0 points per game for Keene.

Ramapo (25-2) and Misericordia (20-7) tip at 7:30.

The winners will play at 7 Sunday.
