Wednesday’s colleges: UMass women’s basketball falls to Rhode Island, 53-50

Maggie Mulligan had another double-double for the UMass women’s basketball team, but the Minutewomen lost at Rhode Island 53-50 on Wednesday.

Mulligan had 14 points and 11 rebounds for UMass (9-20, 3-13 A-10).

Freshman Hailey Leidel added 14 points and five rebounds, but shot 3-for-16 from the floor.

Smith College 77, MIT 70 — The Pioneers advanced to the NEWMAC semifinals with a win over the Engineers in Cambridge.

Kennedy Guest-Pritchett had 19 points and 11 rebounds for Smith College.

The Pioneers play top-seeded Babson on Saturday.

Clark 65, Springfield 54 — Maya Kerstetter (Northampton) came off the bench and had seven points and four rebounds as the seventh-seeded Cougars (14-12) upset the No. 2 Pride in the NEWMAC quarterfinals.

Men’s basketball

Springfield 85, Wheaton 82 (OT) — Jake Ross (Northampton) had 30 points and 17 rebounds as the Pride (14-12) won in the NEWMAC quarterfinal round.


UMass will play at Fenway Park in Boston this spring.

The Red Sox announced that the second round of the 2017 Baseball Beanpot will be played at Fenway on April 19.

UMass will play at Harvard on April 5 in the first round. The Minutemen will play either Boston College or Northeastern in the consolation/championship at Fenway.
