SOUTH HADLEY — Volunteers are revitalizing the veterans memorial stone at The Village Cemetery in South Hadley Falls just in time for Memorial Day.

Every year, volunteers re-do the cemetery’s mulch. But by this year, the memorial “really started looking shabby, so we decided to take out all the old mulch and re-do everything so it looks really nice,” said Jon Camp, treasurer of the Proprietors of the South Hadley Cemetery. Next week, another volunteer will also plant geraniums.

On Thursday, Camp worked alongside fellow volunteer Peter Barra as part of the ongoing project, which has involved two to three hours of work each day for the past couple of weeks.

“The veterans served this country, and it’s showing some respect,” Camp said of the project. At the center of the memorial, a stone reads, “Dedicated to the memory of all veterans who have served our country.”

Over 1,200 veterans are buried in the cemetery, Camp said, including 52 Civil War veterans. The cemetery, established in 1839, is the second-oldest in South Hadley and remains active.

For many families who visit their loved ones at the cemetery, the memorial is among the first sights they see, “so it’s going to give them a nice feeling about the cemetery — nicely laid out, nice flowers, fresh mulch,” Camp said.

Camp, who has volunteered for the cemetery for the past decade, expects the main work to be done by Friday, leaving time for everything to be in place by Memorial Day, which is May 25.
