WILLIAMSBURG – Two veterans-focused events — a spaghetti and chicken dinner and a memorial plaque cleanup —  are set to be put on in association with the Haydenville American Legion Post 236 this month.

The Sons of the American Legion will hold its final spaghetti and chicken dinner of the season on May 17 at 6 p.m. at Haydenville American Legion Post 236.

“It will go towards all kinds of things,” said Mark Shlosser, commander of Post 236, on the money raised.

He noted that recently the sons gave 10 veterans $200 each to help with home heating and also donates to organizations such as the veterans PTSD nonprofit One Call Away.

“We donate throughout the year,” Shlosser said.

The menu at the May 17 dinner will include spaghetti and meatballs, roast chicken, rolls, and salad and will be $12 for adults and $6 for children.

“It’s all you can eat while you’re there,” said Jim Hall, junior vice commander at Haydenville American Legion Post 236.

Hall will be organizing the second annual Raise Up Our Veterans event on May 21.

Raise Up Our Veterans is a biannual effort founded by Hall that restores the bronze veterans plaques at St. Mary of the Assumption Cemetery in Leeds/Haydenville.

“We dig them up, we reset them,” Hall said.

The first such event took place in October, and Hall is hoping for a bigger turnout this month. However, he still said that the people who showed up in October worked hard, and he estimated that 50 plaques were restored then.

“We’re stepping it up,” said Hall. “This year I’d like to see at least a hundred done.”

Those interested in participating in the event on May 21 can call Post 236 at 413-268-9264, or they can email Hall at jmes.ha@comcast.net.
