Veterans being honored around county

Post-election days will be filled with opportunities for celebrating the service of those who have given all for their country, as communities gear up for Veterans Day celebrations throughout the country. Here in Hampshire County, a number of venues are preparing parades, breakfasts, and ceremonious displays scheduled to take place over the next week.

Belchertown

Belchertown will be celebrating Veterans Day in a commemoration at the high school on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. The Chestnut Hill Community School band and chorus will perform.

Hadley

The Hadley Council on Aging, along with Building Bridges, a local organization dedicated to strengthening veteran communities, is hosting a lunch on Nov. 13, which will be free for veterans and one guest each. The lunch will take place at the CPA at 46 Middle St.

Granby

Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church will host its annual Salute to Our Veterans Dinner on Nov. 9. A roast pork dinner will be served beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday, and last until 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 and available through the parish office at 256 State St. Guests will have the choice to eat in or take out.

Easthampton

On Nov. 11, Easthampton will hold a series of ceremonies around the city throughout the morning, beginning at 10 a.m., when a rifle detail will assemble at American Legion Post 224 on 190 Pleasant St.

Following will be a ceremony at City Hall at 10:30 a.m. that includes prayer, a memorial wreath laying, a rifle salute, and taps. The same ceremony will be repeated at the Brookside Cemetery Veterans Monument. At 11 a.m., ceremonies will take place at the Emily Williston Library monuments, with the main ceremonies of the day taking place at the Post 224 headquarters at 11:30.

Westhampton

The Friends of the Westhampton Council on Aging, along with Outlook Farm Barn and Eatery, will sponsor a free breakfast on Nov. 12 running from 7 to 10 a.m. The breakfast will take place at the Outlook Farm at 136 Main Rd. The breakfast is free for veterans and those currently serving in the armed forces.

Amherst

Amherst will hold its Annual Veterans Day Breakfast at the Bangs Community Center on Monday, Nov. 11, at 9 a.m. After breakfast, at 10:45 a.m., participants will gather around the North Common flagpole for a formal salute. Tickets are $15 a person and available at both the Amherst Town Hall and the Amherst Senior Center.

Hatfield

At 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, Hatfield will hold a Veterans Day ceremony outside Town Hall at 59 Main St.

Holyoke

On Nov. 11, Holyoke will honor veterans with a ceremony at the city’s War Memorial at 310 Appleton St., with guests welcome beginning at 9 a.m. Refreshments will be provided, and the ceremony begins at 10 a.m. During the event, Wayne Klinge will be recognized as veteran of the year, and Nick’s Nest will be recognized as the city’s business of the year.

City police Officer Melissa Rex will also be acknowledged as public servant of the year, and post office clerk Cathy Dugatis will be named civilian of the year.

Northampton

The Northampton Veterans Council will host its Annual Veterans Day Breakfast at the Bluebonnet Diner on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 9 a.m. Frank R. Bertrand Jr. will receive the Gerald E. Clark Award for his outstanding contributions to the Northampton Veterans community. Tickets are $15 per person.

At 11 a.m., the Florence Veterans Day Parade will take place. Participants are asked to line up at the VFW Post 8006 by 10:30 a.m., where the parade will begin and head to Trinity Row where a ceremony will be held. Russell Warriner, retired Army, will be guest speaker.

South Hadley

On Thursday, Nov. 7, American Legion Post 260 of South Hadley will be acknowledging WWII British paratrooper Hugh Adamson, who had served with distinction in a long list of World War II battles and died in 2013. Adamson is buried at Evergreen Cemetery, where he will be honored for his service in the British military — one of America’s closest allies in World War II — in a ceremony scheduled for 6:15 p.m.

The following morning, on Nov. 8 at 8:30 a.m., veterans are invited to a free breakfast at the South Hadley Council on Aging at 45 Dayton St. Veterans are allowed to bring a single guest. Residents and non-residents alike can both currently RSVP through the Council on Aging.

Williamsburg

On Monday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m., Williamsburg will recognize its heroes in the town’s annual ceremony in the Williamsburg Veterans Memorial Park at the Village Hill Cemetery.

Chesterfield

The Chesterfield Council on Aging will host a Veterans Day breakfast on Sunday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Chesterfield General Store on 432 Main Road. It will be followed by a ceremony organized by the Daughters of the American Revolution at 11 a.m.
