Volunteers needed for advocacy series on Syria

NORTHAMPTON — The Valley Syrian Relief Committee is seeking participants for a month-long educational and advocacy series in March.

The “Month of Witness, Action for Syria” event, taking place six years since the war in Syria began, will feature a variety of events for all ages.

“The goal of the month is to put Syria back in people’s consciousness,” said Sara Weinberger, a committee member.

Weinberger said when all the devastation happened in Aleppo many people were paying attention but interest has waned since a cease-fire began.

“Everything is not OK there,” she said. “We want people to be aware, want to increase awareness.”

Weinberger said the committee wants people to come together and do something. The action, she said, wouldn’t require lots of time and would be met with support from the committee.

“We have a whole list of things people can do. We would like to have more churches and synagogues and mosques sign on,” Weinberger said. “We would love to get some non-faith based organizations to sign on.” Ideas include hosting a “Soup for Syria” event, sponsoring a showing of the documentary “White Helmets” or hosting the letter writing campaign “Letters of Hope.”

A family event is being planned at Congregation B’nai Israel, hosted by the VRSC, for Sunday, March 12. More events are in the works and details will be forthcoming.

Religious and community leaders in the area wishing to take part are asked to contact Valley Syrian Relief by Jan. 31 through email at valleysyrianrfelief@gmail.com or by calling 413-923-8144 or 413-586-0403.
