WHATELY — School Union 38 is set to start the 2016-2017 school year Wednesday with a few notable changes, including a new superintendent .
Lynn M. Carey was appointed to the position in March by the Union 38 and Frontier Regional School Committees.
“I have enjoyed spending time this summer familiarizing myself with the district, driving through each of the four towns that make up our community and learning about Frontier and Union 38,” Carey said in an email. “Our K-2 teachers will be using a new comprehensive system for teaching literacy skills that will strengthen consistency in reading instruction.”
Other appointments in the school district include a new principal at Conway Grammar School, Kristen Gordon, and a new assistant principal at Deerfield Elementary School, Tina Gemme.
Carey said all faculty, kindergarten through 12th grade, in the district will participate in professional development for an hour and 15 minutes Friday afternoons.
Carey said initiatives this year include “continued work on meeting the individual needs of students through differentiated instruction, using innovative tools and approaches to integrate technology across the curriculum, expanding the use of an effective math instructional resource, and modifying science curriculum and instruction to include engineering design to meet the new 2016 science standards.”
As the new school year begins, Carey said she looks forward to working with families, staff and students of the school district.
