AMHERST – In hopes of building the UMass football team into a winning program, Minuteman coach Mark Whipple has hired a defensive coordinator with some experience doing exactly that.

According to multiple UMass sources, Ed Pinkham, who spent the last four years as the defensive coordinator at Western Michigan, will take over that role for the Minutemen. An announcement is expected shortly.

Pinkham, 63, replaces Tom Masella, who was dismissed after the season, following three years in the role. Pinkham became available when WMU coach P.J. Fleck was hired at Minnesota. Pinkham was a candidate to replace Fleck has the head coach but wasn’t hired.

Pinkham helped lead the Broncos to a MAC championship, and a trip to the Cotton Bowl, for being the top program outside of the Power Five conferences. WMU finished 13-1, with it’s lone loss being the to Wisconsin in the Cotton Bowl. WMU went from one of the worst programs in the MAC to the top of the league during Pinkham’s tenure with Fleck there.

The Broncos led the Mid-American Conference in scoring defense (19.8 points per game allowed) and was second in total defense (353.6 yards per game allowed). They led the MAC with 15 interceptions.

Pinkham has New England ties. He was at New Hampshire from 1977-88 in multiple roles and was the defensive coordinator at Holy Cross from 1992-1995.

He was defensive coordinator of the 2003 Colgate team that upset the Minutemen in 2003 Division I-AA playoffs, the last game of Whipple’s first tenure leading UMass.

The New Jersey native is an Allegheny College alum.
