Locked in a 1-1 game, the UMass women’s soccer team allowed two goals in the final 20 minutes of regulation as top-seeded Saint Louis scored a 3-1 victory to capture the Atlantic-10 Conference championship on Sunday in Saint Louis.

The Billikens scored early to take a 1-0 lead before No. 3 UMass tied the game in the 37th minute when Bella Recinos buried a goal with an assist from Chandler Pedolzky.

It stayed that way until the 74th minute, when Saint Louis’ Lyndsey Heckel notched the eventual game winner. Emily Gaebe added an insurance marker in the 90th minute to seal the title on home turf.

Saint Louis held a 16-6 edge in shots. UMass goalie Bella Mendoza made four saves on the afternoon.

Amherst 1, Colby 0 – The fourth-seeded Mammoths won a wild NESCAC championship game on Sunday, burying all of their penalty kicks for a 5-4 edge and a conference title.

The teams played 110 scoreless minutes before penalties were called on to decide things. It was the third consecutive NESCAC title for Amherst, becoming the second NESCAC team to win three straight titles.

The UMass field hockey team fell in the Atlantic 10 Conference championship game, 2-1, to Saint Joseph's on Saturday in Philadelphia.

The Minutewomen entered the final as the top seed, but it was the No. 2 Hawks who scored the decider in the fourth quarter to claim the conference crown.

Tied 1-1, Saint Joseph's Sol Borensztein scored less than four minutes into the final quarter. Despite three shots and a penalty corner following the go-ahead goal, UMass couldn't find the equalizer as it came up short once again in the A-10 championship. Saturday's defeat marked the third year in a row the Minutewomen have lost to the Hawks in the conference final.

Neva Eisenga secured UMass' lone goal of the afternoon, which knotted up the score 1-1 in the third quarter. Elena Cloconeanu earned the assist on the Minutewomen strike.

Saint Joseph's went ahead in the first quarter with a goal from Julia Duffhuis as the Hawks never trailed in this one. The Minutewomen led the game in shots, (10-4) and corners (9-5) in the loss.

UMass dropped to 15-5 overall, and will wait to see if it is selected for an at-large bid into the NCAA Division 1 Tournament.

Vermont 4, UMass 0

It was a difficult weekend at Gutterson Fieldhouse for the Minutemen, which followed up Friday night’s 3-3 tie (shootout loss) with a 4-0 loss to the Catamounts on Saturday in Burlington, Vt.

Vermont took control of the game in the first period, as Massimo Lombardi scored just 1 minute, 12 seconds into regulation, and Luca Münzenberger made it 2-0 with a strike later in the stanza.

The Minutemen held a 26-19 edge in shots on goal, but Vermont goalie Axel Mangbo stopped all 26 shots he faced for the shutout.

UMass goalie Michael Hrabal was pulled by head coach Greg Carvel after allowing his second goal of the night. Jackson Irving came on and played well in relief, keeping the visitors in the game with 11 saves.
