Another day another watch list for the UMass football team.
Rising junior tailback Marquis Young was named to the watch list for Doak Walker Award, which annually goes to the nation’s top running back.
This is Young’s second year on the watch list.
Young rushed for 898 yards and four touchdowns on 197 carries in 2016, highlighted by a 125-yard performance against Mississippi State. He had four games over 100 yards. He rushed for 960 yards and seven touchdowns on 152 carries as a sophomore.
The watch list will be narrowed down to 10 on Nov. 15 and to three on Nov. 20. The winner will be announced as part of the college football awards on Dec. 7.
Young is the fifth UMass player to be named to a watch list this month. He joined:
Adam Breneman — John Mackey Award (top tight end), Fred Biletnikoff Award (top pass catcher), Danny Wuerffel Trophy (top player combining academic, community and on-field performance),
Andy Isabella — Biletnikoff Award,
Steve Casali — Bronko Nagurski Award (national defensive player of the year)
Logan Laurent — Ray Guy Award (top punter)
Andrew Ford — Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award (top senior or fourth-year junior quarterback).
