Tuesday’s colleges: UMass hockey falls at Maine

The UMass hockey team had more shots and more power-play opportunities, but Maine had goalie Jeremy Swayman.

The Boston Bruins draft pick made 34 saves and sent the Minutemen home on the short end of a 3-1 score in Hockey East action, Tuesday at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine.

After a scoreless first period, Maine scored three times in the second to take control of the game.

Jake Gaudet had the lone goal for UMass (10-10-1, 4-6-1 Hockey East). He scored with Ryan Wischow (17 saves) pulled and 35 seconds left in the game.

Niko Hildenbrand and Cale Makar had assists for the Minutemen, who were held scoreless on six power-play tries.

UMass hosts Northeastern, Friday at 7.

Women’s swimming & diving

UMass 155, Rhode Island 119 — Ansley Baker won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.55) and the 100 free (52.38) as the Minutewomen bested their New England neighbor/Atlantic 10 rival on the road.
