HOLYOKE — Two people were injured in separate shootings over the weekend and one police officer who responded to both incidents is being credited with saving the life of one of the victims, according to the Holyoke Police Department.

On Sunday, at around 7 p.m. Holyoke Police Officer Thomas Spafford was on patrol in the area of Maple and Sargent streets and heard several gunshots that may have originated from the Chestnut and Sargent Street area, according the Police Department. The gunshots were reported to the station and several officers responded to what police described as a motorcycle drive by shooting.

According to Police Capt. Matthew Moriarty, Officer Michael Whelihan was flagged down by a resident, and was advised of a male victim with a gunshot wound in the alley between Chestnut and Maple streets. The victim was given first aid by responding officers and transported to an area hospital where he underwent surgery.

On Saturday at around 10:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to 7 East Court for the report of a gunshot victim. Officer Whelihan and other officers entered the property and found the male victim with two gunshot wounds, one to a leg and the other to his buttocks, according to the Police Department.

In a statement about the incident, Moriarty wrote that the victim’s leg wound was “bleeding severely” and that Whelihan used his tourniquet to stop and control the bleeding. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital and was rushed into surgery, he said. The doctor on scene stated the application of the officer’s tourniquet saved the victim’s life, according to Moriarty.

The Holyoke Criminal Investigation Bureau has opened investigations into both shootings and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the bureau at (413)322-6900.
