AMHERST — Two town residents were killed in a Tuesday night car crash on West Street, according to the Northwestern district attorney’s office.

Amherst Police responded around 7:42 p.m. to the area of 916 West St., near Hampshire College, for a head-on crash involving a Datsun 280ZX and a Honda minivan, according to Mary Carey, a spokeswoman for the DA’s office.

The two occupants of the Datsun, Euclides Almeida, 42, and Ailton Correia, 28, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the DA’s office. Almeida was driving the vehicle.

The driver of the minivan remained at the scene and cooperated with police before being transported to the hospital with minor injuries. No charges or citations have been issued.

A preliminary investigation of the crash indicates the Datsun was traveling south, crossed the double yellow line and crashed head-on with the northbound minivan, according to the DA’s office.

Amherst Police, Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Northwestern district attorney’s office, Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS), and Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services are investigating the crash.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of the two deaths. More information will be released as it becomes available, the district attorney’s office said.
