GREENFIELD — A Turners Falls man is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Greenfield District Court on a charge of motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of drugs in an Oct. 4 crash that killed an Acton man on the Route 2 bypass.

George Cortina, 62, will also be charged with operating under the influence of drugs causing serious bodily injury, operating under the influence of drugs (second offense), negligent operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a Class A controlled substance (heroin) and a marked lanes violation, according to Mary Carey, Northwestern district attorney’s office spokeswoman.

According to Carey, the Greenfield Police Department responded to the two-vehicle crash on the Route 2 bypass in Greenfield near the 51.6 mile-marker at roughly 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4. Officers determined the Ford Explorer, driven by Cortina, crossed the center line into the westbound lane and struck a Toyota Yaris, killing 41-year-old Jonathan Rohrs and a dog that was in the Yaris.

Cortina and a passenger were transported to hospitals with serious injuries. At the time, Greenfield Fire Chief Robert Strahan said one patient was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield and the other was airlifted to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.

According to Carey, Cortina’s hospitalization delayed his arraignment, which she said is expected to be held virtually. No additional information on individuals involved in the crash was available Wednesday.
