Bounce, bounce and bounce some more

There are lots of ways to stay in shape during the winter months. Some are fun, some, not so much. Staff writer Lisa Spear set out to find a few ways that people are enjoying indoor exercise that might not immediately spring to mind when you are seeking a fitness routine.


Ondine Graham, 29, looks like a ninja, dressed in black tights and a long-sleeve black shirt, as she bounces through the air in a room where the floor is a series of trampolines that seem to go on forever.

She is springing from one square of trampoline to the next at Bounce! Trampoline Sports in Springfield on a recent Friday night.

“That feeling of weightlessness is so joyful,” she says as she catches her breath. I can’t stop smiling — I am so happy — it really is like being a little kid.”

The trampoline park opened in 2016 in a building that once housed a vacant movie theater. The owners were looking to invest in a space with very high ceilings and this location fit the bill, says the managing partner Rob Doty. Now there are 16,000 square feet of trampolines to bounce on. It’s an activity that’s popular with kids, of course. The park hosts plenty of birthday parties and has time set aside for toddlers, but adults, too, are taking an interest in bouncing as a way to stay in shape, he says. Some business comes from gymnasts who want to practice their moves and, in one case, some circus performers from the Big E stopped by to have some fun

Occasionally, you might see people doing flips or summersaults. “It’s amazing to see some of those people get out there with the tricks that they do,” Doty says.

An overnight counselor at Berkshire Hills Music Academy in South Hadley, and a snowboarder, Graham comes here from her home in Granby at least once a week for about 30-minutes. It’s just one more way she stays in shape.

“I am more fit now than I have ever been in my entire life and I feel better now than I ever have in my entire life,” she says.

Graham learned about the park from a newspaper article announcing the opening.

“I was super stoked,” she says. “I got excited because I wanted to learn about aerial awareness and the best place to do that is on the trampoline.”

For Graham, this is a cardiac workout that doubles as a way to train for snowboarding since bouncing on a trampoline helps with balance, too.

It’s a safe way to train and gain the confidence to do snowboard tricks, like a flip, on a safe surface, before trying it on the real thing, she says. “If you mess up on the trampoline, you are not going 30 miles per hour down hill.” 

Graham’s training includes bouncing straight in the air, landing flat on her stomach and then bouncing back up and landing on her back.

“I feel very close to being able to do a flip,” she says. She also can take leaps, with no fear, into a pit at the park that is filled with foam blocks.

She brings a notebook to track her progress and sometimes she brings a friend to jump with her because it’s just more fun. “I invited all my co-workers and they all want to go now, too,” she says. “There is a huge interest in trampolines. It’s just a lot of fun.”
