Question not why, but how gun massacres occur

Since the December 2012 gun massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School murdered 20 children and six educators, there have been over 1,600 more gun massacres (four or more gun casualties at one event) in the United States.

But that is only the tip of the gun iceberg. Guns kill over 35,000 Americans every year. About 62 percent of these gun deaths are suicides.

As Joanne Marqusee wrote in her column (“Gun violence is a public health issue,” May 17), guns are a public health issue. Guns do not protect. They endanger.

Guns have no rights. But children do have a right to go to safe schools and live without fear of gun violence.

When these gun massacres occur (almost exclusively in the U.S.), the question is not why but how. The how is guns.
