Thondup Tsering: Misleading headline

Published: 1/12/2021 11:14:49 AM

The title of the piece, “Federal budget backs Tibetan independence” in the Tuesday, Jan. 5 issue of the Gazette is factually incorrect and misleading.

Though historically Tibet has been an independent nation, the 2020 Tibetan Policy and Support Act that Congressman Jim McGovern introduced in the house and that President Donald Trump signed into law on Monday, Dec. 28, does not in any way, form or shape “backs Tibetan independence.”

Nowhere in the 21 pages of the bill is there any provision or mention of Tibetan independence. In fact it is the position of the Central Tibetan Administration to resolve the Tibet issue peacefully through dialogue using the Middle Way Approach and that is why the first section of the 2020 Tibetan Policy and Support Act is on Tibetan negotiations and not independence.

The bill also covers Tibet project principle: diplomatic representation relating to Tibet; statement of policy regarding the succession or reincarnation of the Dalai Lama; policy regarding the environment and water resources on the Tibetan plateau; democracy in the Tibetan exile community; sustainability in Tibetan communities; and authorization of appropriations.
