NORTHAMPTON — Tapestry Health is holding a candlelight vigil tonight to raise awareness about opioid-related overdoses.

The event begins at 6 p.m. on the front steps of First Churches in Northampton and is timed to coordinate with International Overdose Awareness Day.

According to data provided by the Florence-based agency, there were 1,658 unintentional deaths from opioid-related overdoses in Massachusetts in 2015, including 17 occurring in Northampton. The figure in Northampton is down from 25 such deaths in 2014.

Tapestry Health provides educational resources and access to the overdose-reversing drug naloxone, commonly known as Narcan, to people likely to witness or experience an overdose. The agency provided more than 2,400 Narcan kits to people across western Massachusetts during the past year.

More information about Tapestry Health’s overdose prevention trainings and their locations can be found online at tapestry.org.
