I was disappointed to read that the Hampshire Probate and Family Court is moving from downtown Northampton to 15 Atwood Drive. Although the article mentions Atwood Drive’s “dedicated public transportation stops,” the reality is that this is only for the rather limited B48 bus.

The court’s prior location was a true public transportation hub. Moreover, because a nearby I-91 exit separates it from Northampton center, it is dangerous to bike and impossible to walk to the new the location. I understand how private businesses sometimes leave downtown, but I think that a public entity for and by the people should continue to support the city center.

Instead, the court chose to make its access difficult for those with fewer means and/or climate change concerns. If the court does not move back downtown, I hope at the very least Northampton connects it with a sidewalk.
