SOUTHAMPTON — A storm that moved through the Pioneer Valley on Wednesday afternoon caused significant damage in several communities.

Power lines were down in both Southampton and Easthampton after a severe thunderstorm and strong winds rolled through the region. At 4:45 p.m., Eversource reported that about 770 customers were without power after the storm — 185 in Easthampton, 584 in Southampton and one in Westhampton. National Grid reported at the same time that there were two customers without power in Northampton.

At around 10:15 p.m. Eversource reported 266 customers were affected by outages in western Massachusetts. Of those, 29 were in Pelham, 14 were in Pelham, less than three were in Worthington and one was in Middlefield. In this same time period, National Grid reported four affected customers, with outages in both Granby and Belchertown.

“Southampton has been hit with quite the storm!” read a post on Southampton Fire Department’s Facebook page. “We have downed wires and trees throughout town including the areas of Strong Road, Pleasant Street, Valley Road, Coleman Road, and East Street. Please travel with caution and DO NOT approach downed wires.”

In Easthampton, police responded to calls of downed power lines on Plain Street and Briggs Street, according to the department’s Facebook page.

Dispatchers at the police departments in both communities said there was nobody to speak with a reporter about the damage early Wednesday evening.
