NORTHAMPTON – Massachusetts State Police arrested a 46-year-old Vermont man Tuesday on drug trafficking charges after he was stopped for an unreadable license plate on Route 91 in Northampton.

Trooper Tyler Hersom of the Northampton State Police barracks was monitoring traffic on the highway when he observed a gray Nissan sedan pass by with an unreadable license plate and initiated a traffic stop, according to State Police.

After stopping the vehicle, Hersom determined that the driver, Harry Sanborn, of Chelsea, Vermont, was driving with a suspended license. Hersom requested a tow truck to respond to the scene, removed Sanborn from his vehicle then placed him in handcuffs. During a pat-frisk of Sanborn, Hersom felt what he suspected to be a glass pipe commonly used for illegal narcotics, then found a small amount of a substance suspected to be crack cocaine, according to State Police. Additional cruisers arrived on scene to assist with the traffic stop.

Troopers conducted an inventory of the vehicle prior to it being towed from the scene and found a brown paper bag with approximately 900 wax packets each containing a substance suspected to be heroin. These packets weighed a combined 18 grams and the paper bag also contained three separate baggies of a substance suspected to be crack cocaine weighing a combined 47 grams.

Sanborn was transported to the Northampton barracks for booking and State Police said a bail commissioner was contacted and set bail at $25,000. Sanborn was arraigned Wednesday in Northampton District Court on charges of trafficking in crack cocaine and heroin, and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle on Wednesday. His case was continued to April 1, according to the district court.
