Karen Bierwert wins 400 IM at masters national swim event

Northampton native Karen Bierwert placed first in the 400-meter individual medley in 7 minutes, 0.55 seconds at the U.S. Masters Swimming Summer National Championships.

Bierwert placed first in the 65-69 age group. She represented New England Masters at the long-course event, which was held Aug. 2-6 at the University of Minnesota.

Bierwert also placed second in the 200 breaststroke (3:36.08), 100 breast (1:38.57), 200 back (3:14.13) and 200 IM (3:18.83). She was third in the 100 back (1:31.81).

New England placed first in the 200 freestyle relay in 2:11.97. The relay included Diann Uustal, formerly of Amherst, Laura Delorey, Tracy Grilli and Bierwert.

The same relay placed second in the 200 medley in 2:32.68.

New England placed ninth overall in the Regional Club Division and fourth overall in the Regional Club Women’s Division.

Local ice skaters take home medals

A group of ice skaters who train at Keene Ice (Keene, New Hampshire) recently returned from the 2017 State Games of America, held in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Ruth Morse, of Hadley, won eight gold medals and one silver.

Giorgia Santore, of Sunderland, won two gold medals, one silver, two bronze and two fourth-place ribbons.

Amelia Bouchard, of Greenfield, took home one gold, two silvers, one bronze, one fourth place and one fifth place.

Aviana Bouchard, of Greenfield, had three golds, one silver, one bronze, one fourth and one sixth.

Maggie Provencal, of Colrain, had one gold, one silver, one bronze, one fourth and one sixth.

Hamp Parks offers men’s fall softball

Northampton Parks & Recreation is accepting teams for its Men’s Fall Softball League.

The deadline for all fees, proofs, rosters and a signed player conduct form is Aug. 21 by 4 p.m.

Each team will play a 12-game regular season schedule, followed by playoffs. League play starts on Sept. 10 and will continue through October.

Mug Race set for Aug. 19 in Montague

The 37th annual Montague Mug Race will be held Aug. 19.

The 5.5-mile race starts at 8:30 a.m. at the Village Common. Pewter Mugs are awarded to top male/female finishers and coffee mugs to top finishers of each division. T-shirts to first 90 runners.

The 13th annual Mini Mug race (2 miles) will kick off at 8:35 a.m.

Both races will finish at the ball field. All runners are entered into drawing for local prizes.

Registration forms are located at the YMCA, Body Shoppe, Montague Post Office and Park & Rec. Registration can be done at runreg.com. Proceeds benefit Montague Old Home Days and the Fire Association.
