SPRINGFIELD — A Southampton man pleaded guilty to numerous child pornography charges in federal court on Tuesday.

Bruce Singer, 72, pleaded guilty to five counts of distribution of child pornography, one count of receipt of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography in U.S. Federal District Court in Springfield. Judge Mark G. Mastroianni ordered that Singer be detained until his sentencing on July 19.

Hundreds of images of child pornography were found on electronic devices in Singer’s home when police searched it in 2015, According to the United States District Attorney’s Office of Massachusetts. The office said Singer exchanged images with James J. Smith, who was convicted of child pornography charges. In 2017, Smith was sentenced to 138 months in prison.

If his plea agreement is accepted by the judge, Singer will be sentenced to eight years in prison. The receipt and distribution of child pornography charges can each carry a sentence of 20 years in prison, while the possession charge can carry a 10-year sentence.
