SOUTH HADLEY — Stephen Jaszek, 62, a retired music teacher with Auburn Public Schools, was arrested on child rape and aggravated assault charges on Wednesday and will be arraigned Thursday in Worcester Superior Court.

The crimes are alleged to have been committed within the last 10 years at the Julia Bancroft Elementary School, according to a statement by the Auburn Police Department.

Jaszek, of South Hadley, faces four counts of child rape and one count of aggravated assault. One victim has come forward at this time.

Police said that Jaszek taught primar ily at Juli    a Bancroft Elementary School in Auburn, but also worked at Pakachoag Elementary School. He had been employed by the district for about 35 years. Jaszek also taught instrumental lessons outside of school hours on a per diem basis at William E. Norris School in Southampton as recently as the past school year.

Hampshire Regional School Districts Superintendent Aaron Osborne said that the school provided Jaszek with a site for his own instrumental music lessons, but that Jaszek did not work for the school. These lessons primarily took place after school and occasionally during recess, and included both private and group lessons. Jaszek held these lessons for about three years.

Auburn Police were assisted by South Hadley detectives and patrol officers as well as troopers assigned to the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section.

In a statement, Auburn Public Schools Superintendent Maryellen Brunelle referred to Jaszek as a “longtime” teacher in the school district who retired in 2014.

“As disturbing as the circumstances are, we’re thankful that the victim had to courage to come forward to share her story,” said Auburn Detective Sergeant Richard Mills.
