SOUTH HADLEY — Halfway through its ninth season, the South Hadley Farmers’ Market has been canceled for the rest of the summer due to a lack of vendors and the resignation of its market manager.

Board President Anne Barry said the market was not able to attract new vendors this year, and several vendors from previous years went to bigger markets like Amherst and Northampton to sell their fruits, vegetables and other wares.

“I feel that now there are so many farmers markets, so much competition,” Barry said. “We can’t compete with the bigger markets.”

Fewer customers came to the weekly market this summer due to the lack of sellers. This caused three of the vendors who had planned to sell at the market until the end of the summer to withdraw midway through the season.

“They were not making enough money for the effort involved,” Barry said.

The location of the market on the town common also became an issue due to a lack of parking. “It’s a sweet space and has a nice small town feel, but parking is difficult for vendors and customers alike,” Barry said.

While the market’s season was cut short this summer, Barry says the board does not want this to be the end.

“We are hopeful to have a market next year,” Barry said. “We are looking into a different location which will be better for vendors and customers alike.”
