SOUTH HADLEY — Allyson Garcia, a member of the South Hadley School Committee who was elected in 2020, has resigned.

In a resignation letter sent to the town on Nov. 29, Garcia stated that the School Committee’s Nov. 18 meeting had been her last. She said that the workload at her job had recently increased, making her ability to commit to the School Committee “impossible.”

“I feel it wouldn’t be fair to the town of South Hadley for me to only be half committed to my School Committee work, as it is a big responsibility, especially with all the recent changes in the district,” Garcia wrote.

Garcia, who is listed as the vice-chair of the School Committee, was elected for a three-year term in 2020. She is the second person to resign from the five-member committee in the second half of this year.

Charles Miles, whose first term on the South Hadley School Committee was set to end next year, resigned in September amid online attacks by a blogger who called him a “child abuser” for supporting a masking requirement for town schools, posted pictures of Miles’ children and made derogatory remarks about them.

Town residents now have 30 days to submit applications of interest for the position, after which the School Committee and Select Board will make a joint appointment to fill the role. That person would serve until April, when they would run for election to fill the remainder of Garcia’s term.
