Barbara Solow: Why the override is worth supporting

I will be voting for Mayor David Narkewicz’s proposed property tax override on March 3 because my family has benefited from Northampton’s quality public schools and other children in our city deserve no less.

Overrides are far from an ideal way to raise money for education. But until our state provides adequate funding for public schools (and changes the system so that public schools are no longer penalized by school choice), there is no other way to avoid harmful cuts to our school system.

I am reassured by the fact that funds from the previous override have lasted three years longer than planned, and that there are exemptions available to Northampton residents who are unable to pay the tax increase.

This year’s override will support other critical services in addition to education. Let’s support the override, while we continue to work for a more just and sustainable system of funding needed public services.
