HADLEY — A small fire in the basement of a Route 9 home was extinguished Wednesday morning before causing major damage, and two dogs inside the home were rescued, according to Hadley Fire Chief Michael Spanknebel.

Firefighters were dispatched to the 54 Russell St. dwelling at 9:07 a.m., finding smoke coming from the basement on its east side, Spanknebel said.

Northampton and South Hadley firefighters also responded while Hadley Police closed the highway between Bay Road and West Street for a short time.

Spanknebel said both dogs were removed from the basement by Hadley firefighters and taken to an emergency veterinarian in Sunderland. The family was safely out of the home when firefighters got there, and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
