Isaac Ben Ezra an inspired advocate

The death of Isaac Ben Ezra, from Amherst, leaves a vacuum that may never be filled. Thanks for the Gazette’s lengthy tribute to Ben Ezra’s life and legacy (“A social justice beacon dies,” Oct. 4).

I was deeply impressed that he marched in Selma with Martin Luther King in 1965. Ben Ezra was unique: a clinical social worker, a community activist, ever concerned with civil rights. He was truly an inspired advocate for older persons — for their health care and their dignity.

He was in some ways like our Studs Terkel, listening empathetically to people’s thoughts and concerns and then pushing ahead to act on behalf of others. We’ll miss him.
