Lesley Schneider: World a sadder place without copy editors

This is in response to the editor’s column about copy editing. I have been a technical writer for a very long time. I remember when we had editing departments in computer companies. Senior editors and junior editors.

I fine-tuned my craft as a technical writer with the much-appreciated help of a senior editor. Those days are gone. Technical writers are now expected to edit their own work. Ha.

I remember in the 90s the level of typos rose in the novels I read. I was appalled. I am personally compulsive about words. It takes me twice as long to write simple emails as “normal” people because I constantly fine-tune the sentence structure, etc.

And I still manage to find typos after clicking send. The world is a much sadder place with the loss of those precious, brilliant editors.
