Morgan Schade: Moving forward with wisdom, not fear

How intriguing it is to be new to western Massachusetts in the midst of this pandemic. I find myself soaking up the beautiful outdoors and dreaming about the sense of community that will ensue when this all settles down.

I can already imagine the brotherhood among neighbors and the various ways that we’ll exercise the unity that has been cultivated in this season. I have an even deeper longing to meet some of the wonderful people who live to my left and right and the men and women who own small businesses down the street.

I want to know their names, their stories and their friendship. As we see in the news, there will be a day that these social-distance restrictions will begin to loosen in our towns. Some individuals may maintain their shelter-in-place and self-isolation. Others may choose to overdo it with social interaction.

What I’m asking and believing for our rolling hills is that we would move forward with wisdom and not fear. Let’s be wise and obey the laws put before us. Let’s also continue to love our neighbors and community in more profound ways. Let’s support our local businesses and meet new people. Let’s keep serving our elders and checking in on friends.

I am excited to see what this community is made of and I know that all this time spent apart will not have been in vain. Instead, it is our fuel for a more intentional tomorrow.
